Who are the Cleveland Rovers?
The
Cleveland Rovers were founded in 1978 and currently play Division III
Rugby in the Ohio Rugby Union, part of the Midwest Rugby Union. We play two seasons: the fall season in which we play our League Matches and the Spring Season where exhibitions, tournaments, playoff matches, and the Annual Cleveland Cup are scheduled. We typically field 2 full Men's sides. We also play a shortened version of the game, known as Sevens, during the summer months.
The Rovers consist of a diverse mix of people with various backgrounds and careers including; salespeople, lawyers, engineers, bankers, PhD's, pipe fitters, civil servants, etc. We have even recently hosted players from Scotland and France. We have
current players with all levels of rugby experience and knowledge,
including men who have played since high school and college, but no
experience is required to join the club. Everyone who shows gets to play. The Cleveland Rovers were
founded by a group of guys who shared a common bond, rugby. We play
and practice to develop ourselves, to win, and for the overall
enjoyment of the game. We truly, "Work Hard, Play Harder." Then REPEAT.
Why Become a Rover?
We are looking for any and all athletes. If you do not know anything about rugby, know that there is a position for people of all builds.
- Rugby experience is not necessary.
We are sure to take the time to teach the sport to those that are new
and refresh the minds of those that have been away for a while. All one must have is an open mind, willingness to learn, and a competitive drive to succeed.
- The Rovers field competitive teams and we strive to play a high level of attractive rugby. We work hard on the pitch to have more fun afterward.
- Our travel is light compared to that of a DI or DII rugby club. We
carpool to every away game and visit the social afterward. Although
it would be ideal if everyone could travel to every away game and attend every single practice, we realize that people have different levels of commitment and that is alright. Rugby
is meant to be fun. Although we do have some members who just
participate for the social aspect of the game, we have learned through
the years that the people who sweat and bleed together on a consistent
basis tend to develop a bond that can never be broken. Typically these
are the teams that do great things and that is something for which we
strive.
- The Rovers dues are $100.00 per season for returning players and $50.00 for Rookies. These costs are minimal when compared to many rugby clubs
and payment plans are available. You will not pay dues at your first
practice. We consistently host socials, bar crawls, and fundraisers
including our Annual Fall Classic: The Ohio State vs. Michigan Pig
Roast.
How do I get involved?
The Rovers are always looking for new members, in all facets. Every season we would like to gain players, coaches, administrators, sponsors, and last but not least, supporters. Both teams practice every Tuesday and Thursday at Impett Park from 6:30 to 8:30
with a few pints afterward. We recommend wearing cleats and mouth
guards, but they are not required. Games are on Saturdays at 1:00pm. All men are welcome to come out and play. We would love for you to get to experience the game and the
members of the Cleveland Rovers. Come see the rich tradition that has
lasted the test of time and put a team on the pitch for the last 60
seasons.
